Every household is different. Think about what you and the people you care for would need if you had to stay home without power or leave before conditions become unsafe.
Make a household plan
- Discuss how you will communicate if phones or roads are disrupted.
- Identify where you could go and how you would get there if you need to leave.
- Plan for children, older adults, people with disabilities, medical needs, and pets.
- Check in with neighbors, friends, or family who may need help.
Gather emergency supplies
Plan to meet your household’s basic needs for three to five days, including food, water, sanitation, medications, and medical devices.
Prepare a Stay Box
Keep supplies together for times when staying home is safest: water, nonperishable food, flashlights, batteries, first aid, medications, chargers or backup power, and pet supplies.
Build a Go Bag
Pack essentials in case you need to leave: medications, IDs and important documents, clothing, chargers, snacks, hygiene items, and supplies for children, older adults, and pets.
Complete your preparations before a storm
- Charge phones and backup batteries; refill medications.
- Review communication and transportation plans.
- Place your Stay Box and Go Bag where you can reach them.
Share your plan with people who may need to know it.
